The Grand Prix to Growth

Using AI, design systems, and visual storytelling to transform executive learning into an immersive Formula One experience.

The Challenge

IBM was developing a Formula One-themed learning experience designed to engage executives through storytelling inspired by high-performance racing teams.

The project faced several significant challenges:

  • An aggressive delivery timeline.

  • Multiple stakeholders with competing priorities.

  • A large volume of learning assets requiring visual consistency.

  • A partnership that required balancing F1’s energetic visual identity with IBM's established corporate brand.

  • Limited availability of diverse Formula One imagery in traditional stock photography.

The project needed to feel exciting without sacrificing clarity, accessibility, or IBM's enterprise standards.

Constraints

Time: Aggressive production schedule.

Brand: Two strong brands with different visual languages.

Content: Large number of lessons.

People: Several stakeholders and subject matter experts.

Resources: Three designers working simultaneously.

Visual diversity: Little representation in available F1 imagery.

Results

  • Delivered on schedule despite aggressive timeline.

  • Unified dozens of learning assets under a single visual language.

  • Successfully balanced IBM and F1 branding.

  • Improved visual diversity through responsible AI image generation.

  • Enabled parallel production using reusable design components.

  • Received positive stakeholder feedback.

Business Impact

Every major design decision was made to solve a specific business challenge. A modular design system enabled multiple designers to work in parallel while maintaining a consistent visual language, reducing rework and accelerating production. AI-generated imagery addressed the lack of diverse Formula One visuals, creating a more inclusive learning experience that better reflected IBM's global audience. By balancing Ferrari's dynamic identity with IBM's enterprise standards, the final experience delivered an engaging, cohesive brand story that met stakeholder expectations and was completed on schedule.

Lessons Learned

This project reinforced that strong visual design is about solving business problems, not just creating polished visuals. Building a scalable design system, aligning multiple stakeholders around a shared vision, and using AI thoughtfully allowed us to work faster without sacrificing quality or consistency. I also learned that proactive communication and well-defined processes are just as important as creative execution when leading complex, collaborative projects under tight deadlines.
